Rid-O-Rust - Flow Switch - Installation

These Flow Switch installation instructions assume you will be installing the Flow Switch with Plug Box Option included and that you will be installing a filter to protect the Flow Switch from clogging sand or other particulates from the well. If you have purchased the Flow Switch seperately (without plug box option), you will need to complete all wiring per instructions provided with switch.

1. Examine your current piping and decide where you will be installing the Flow Switch and related equipment. Select an area of piping that carries water to the irrigation system only, not into the house. If this isn't practical, you will need to revamp your well water piping to allow your house water to tee off before the water enters piping feeding the irrigation system. If you have a chlorine injector, make sure it injects chlorine ONLY into water going to the house.

2. Lay out your equipment in correct order. Water flowing to the irrigation system should first pass through a filter (we recommend a Vu-Flow filter) with minimum 60 mesh filtration (to protect flow switch from well dirt and debris). Secondly, water  should pass through a Backflow Device (which prevents Rid-O-Rust concentrate from backing up into your house water). The water then passes through the Flow Switch itself and finally the water passes through the Rid-O-Rust injection fitting tee where the Rid-O-Rust concentrate is actually injected into your well water. It is good to leave at least 4 inches of pipe between each of these devices to allow for service or individual replacement in future years. To summarize - First; Filter, Second; Backflow Device, Third; Flow Sensor Switch, Fourth; Rid-O-Rust Injection Tee. You may also find it convenient to install a ball valve upstream of all four devices to allow for servicing without having to turn off well water to the house. It is most important that you install your backflow device UPSTREAM of the injection pump injection tee to protect your house water. Rid-O-Rust concentrate isn't deadly by any means, it is a phosphate found in most clothes detergents, but could make someone sick if injested in sufficient quantity.

3. IMPORTANT: for proper operation, the Flow Switch MUST be mounted HORIZONTAL and LEVEL to allow float switch to operate correctly. Pipe inlet and outlet should be at BOTTOM of Flow Switch, with plug box vertical.

4. Do NOT inject chlorine into water going through the Flow Switch or used for irrigation purposes.

5. Caution - when cementing Flow Switch into piping system - PVC Cement must NOT enter too deeply into the inlet port where it may gob up and cause interference with the switch mechanism. When cementing PVC pipe into flow switch - carefully but fully coat inside of Flow Switch slip fitting with PVC cement using a circular motion, then coat the outside of the PVC pipe. Insert pipe into flow switch inlet or outlet fitting using a twisting motion to assure cement is thoroughly spread and smeared to make a waterproof connection. Be sure after twisting that your Flow Switch ends up horizontal and level. Remember, your PVC cement will dry in a few seconds, preventing further adjustment. In all cases, be sure PVC pipe is cut square before attempting to cement into fittings, crookedly cut pipe frequently doesn't seal properly to fittings, causing drip leaks.

6. Plug your completely installed Flow Switch into a wall outlet, completing wiring as required to supply 110-115 volt power. The upper plug will be inactive (dead) until water actually flows through your Flow Switch. The lower plug will be continuously active and can be used for any auxilary use your choose. If your lower plug is not active, check your power input to the switch. When water flows through the flow switch the upper plug will become active and this is where you plug in your Rid-O-Rust injection pump. PLUG YOUR INJECTION PUMP INTO UPPER PLUG. Note - if lower plug isn't providing continuous power after installation is completed, check your wall plug and power coming into flow switch.

Note - All Flow Switches are FACTORY SET at the lowest possible set point (water volume flow through flow switch) that each switch can be safely set at. CAUTION: do NOT screw the interior calibration screw down - this will cause the Flow Switch to stick in the ON position.
